Board of Health Statement - Access to Reproductive Health Services

The Bedford Board of Health is committed to protecting and supporting access to reproductive health services as a basic public health right. The Bedford Board of Health stands with countless organizations, including the Massachusetts Medical Society, American Public Health Association, American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Council of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Cancer Society, Planned Parenthood, American College of Physicians, and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in affirming that access to reproductive health care services, including access to birth control, infertility care, pregnancy care services and safe and legal abortion care, is an essential part of comprehensive health care. Currently, access to abortion care in Massachusetts is protected under a 2020 Massachusetts state law, the ROE Act.

The Board recommends that reproductive health information, including legal rights to a safe and legal abortion in Massachusetts; medical information; funding options; and contact information for locations of service be made readily available in print and digital form, in languages commonly spoken in Bedford including English, Mandarin and Spanish and that this information be posted on the Health Department and Board of Health webpages, and made available to any organizations or individuals who request it.
