Automated Recycling Collection

In the summer of 2019 the Town of Bedford  instituted a convenient, exciting method of recycling collection – the automated system.

Automated collection is a technology advanced system of recycling collection and disposal.  The system is called “automated” because a special truck, equipped with a mechanical / robotic arm, automatically lifts and empties special recycling containers without the driver ever leaving the cab of the truck.  This is a system designed to improve the efficiency of hauling Recycling materials, make the task of putting out recyclables easier and cleaner for the resident, improve the appearance of the Town and greatly reduce the injury potential of recycling collectors.

The new automated system is safer, more efficient, avoids spills and wind-blown incidents and requires less labor to collect recyclables.  In addition, because the mechanical arm performs all the lifting, there is no risk of injury to the driver.

Each property that is a participant of the Refuse and Recycling Program is called a service recipient. Each service recipient will be provided with one 65-gallon wheeled recycling cart (blue with black lid) for bottles, cans, and paper and cardboard at no cost.  The new system is the next step in improving recycling service to our residents.

RECYCLING MUST  BE PLACED AT CURBSIDE BY 7AM MONDAY.

Recycling is collected through the use of automated collection trucks. The carts must be 3 feet away from any obstacles (trees, mailboxes, fences, other carts, recycling bins, etc.) with the handles and wheels of the cart facing away from the street, and the cart lid must be closed
