[ARCHIVED] Hemlock Lane to Receive Speed Cushions to Slow Traffic

The Bedford Department of Public Works, working with its contractor, will begin installing four sets of rubber speed cushions on Hemlock Lane the week of September 8th. Police details will be on site to help manage traffic. Road closures are not expected, but please drive with caution in the work area.

Several additional Phase 2 traffic calming measures were proposed and received strong neighborhood support at the May 7, 2025 Transportation Advisory Committee meeting. The installation of rubber speed cushions between Hilltop Drive and Page Road is an interim measure while the full design package is developed and bid for construction in 2026 featuring: permanent asphalt cushions, a mini roundabout, and the realignment of the Route 62/Hemlock Lane intersection. The rubber cushions will be removed in the late fall to avoid impeding snow plow operations. Speed cushions function similarly to speed humps by reducing vehicle speeds. However, they include wheel cut-outs that allow emergency vehicles to bypass or straddle them.
