Final Report on January 2025 Trash & Recycling Communication Survey Reveals Key Insights for Improvement

Bedford, MA – April 8, 2025 – The Department of Public Works (DPW) has released the final report on the Trash & Recycling Communication survey, which was conducted from January to February 2025. The survey aimed to gather valuable resident feedback on how the DPW currently communicates about the Town's Trash and Recycling Program offerings. With 441 responses received, the survey provides important insights into communication preferences, methods, and areas for improvement.

Key Findings:

The survey revealed that print mailers are the most commonly used method for residents to receive information about the DPW's Trash and Recycling Program. More residents report using print mailers over digital tools, indicating that traditional communication methods remain highly effective. Notably, the majority of respondents found it "Easy" or "Very Easy" to locate the information they needed through available communication channels.

However, the survey also pointed out that there is room for improvement in integrating the various communication methods. While print mailers are widely used, the DPW can better synchronize its digital and print communications to ensure that all residents receive consistent information, regardless of their preferred delivery method.

An interesting trend emerged from the survey when respondents were asked about additional communication methods. Many indicated a desire for methods like email or online notifications, which are already in use by the DPW. This suggests that there is an opportunity to increase awareness about the existing channels, ensuring that residents fully understand how to access available information.

One of the most notable findings was that a large number of respondents expressed a preference for text message communication. Although this is currently beyond the DPW's existing communication capacity, it points to a potential avenue for future expansion. The Town may wish to consider exploring the feasibility of a Town-wide push notification system to deliver non-emergency, informational text messages to opt-in participants, in the future.
